Avantone MixCubes Black Passive - one pair
Avantone MixCubes, while initially inspired by the older 5C sound cubes, have quickly established themselves as the industry standard in studios around the world, becoming the best-selling speaker of their type in history. These passive recording and mixing monitors are designed as high-resolution miniature references, suitable for fixed or mobile control rooms. In their development, Avantone Pro sought to combine a timeless design with a unique full-range transducer.
Studios typically use large 2- or 3-way monitors to provide a reference point at higher volume levels. However, it is often essential to test a mix on smaller systems, such as televisions, clock radios, computers, car stereos, or iPod docks. Furthermore, it is crucial to evaluate a mix on monitors without tonal anomalies caused by crossovers or mid-range speakers, paying particular attention to the midrange frequencies (vocals, guitar, keyboard). A full-range monitor without crossover then becomes a valuable tool for this evaluation.
Avantone MixCubes have benefited from ten months of research and development, comparative listening and tuning, to achieve a smoother sound, an evolution from the original 5C Sound Cubes. Listening tests reveal a more open and transparent sonic response in the high frequencies, with extended bass, while retaining their original character.
Regarding the cabinet design, the original 5C Sound Cubes™ were made of 12.7 mm particle board. Avantone opted for a thicker and denser MDF board, offering increased rigidity and low resonance. The enclosure is designed as a 165mm sealed cube with rounded edges, finished in a glossy “RETRO-CREAM” polyurethane. Machined nickel-plated solid metal terminals mounted on an anodized aluminum plate replace the old plastic terminals. In addition, a 7mm thick neoprene pad is recessed into the base to provide non-slip acoustic isolation. The base also features an industry standard microphone stand mount (5/8-27).
The speaker has been completely redesigned: instead of the original 5-inch stamped frame, Avantone has designed a proprietary 5.25-inch die-cast aluminum driver/cone, surpassing the performance of previous models. The custom-made paper cone, made from New Zealand paper pulp with mica fibers, provides lightness and rigidity. The fabric surround, manufactured in Japan to exacting tolerances, and the Sumitomo 1008 steel components ensure optimum performance. MIL-SPEC grade Y-40 magnets contribute to a powerful, low distortion motor with a 43 oz.
