Buchla Ziggy
The Buchla Ziggy is a new electronic instrument built around the renowned Buchla Complex Oscillator concept. Conceived as a true instrument rather than a simple synthesizer, Ziggy offers an immediate and intuitive musical experience, without the need for traditional patches. Through a gestural approach to modulation and composition, it allows for the rapid creation of rich and evolving sonic textures.
True to the Buchla legacy, Ziggy modernizes West Coast synthesis with a simplified interface and a performance-oriented workflow. It can be used on its own to compose sequences and create sounds, but also integrates seamlessly with keyboards like the Buchla LEM 218, MIDI controllers, DAWs, and external modular systems via USB, MIDI, and 1V/octave CV.
Sonically, Ziggy combines a fully analog audio architecture with advanced digital control. Its analog oscillators and low-pass gate deliver Buchla’s signature organic character, while digital control allows for preset saving, complex modulations, and quick access to parameters. An integrated effects processor enriches the sound with reverbs, delays, choruses, distortions, and other creative processing.
The instrument incorporates several original modulation sources, including the Cycler, a hybrid modulator capable of functioning as a clock, envelope, LFO, or random number generator. Modulations are assigned simply via illuminated knobs and sliders, without complex wiring. This approach encourages sonic exploration, happy accidents, and seamless musical interaction.
Musically, Ziggy covers a wide range of textures: from deep bass and organic percussion to experimental leads, evolving pads, and the abstract sounds typical of the Buchla sound. Its compact oak and steel design, USB-C power supply, and comprehensive connectivity make it ideal for both studio and live performance.
