ABOUT THE PRODUCT

2x3-Band Tube Equalizer

What's your first thought when you hear the term "passive equalizer"? First, you probably think of the airy high-frequency components, the rich bass, and the broadly applicable cut and boost that can be used alongside each other. These types of equalizers have been around since the early 1950s; the most famous Pultec EQP-1 from Pulse Techniques was the first to simultaneously combine passive filter circuits with high-quality line amplifiers. The major drawback of the EQP-1 was that it didn't allow precise frequency isolation, but it was still capable of modifying any sound at its core. Many modern equalizers are based on the original EQP-1, both in structure and functionality, which can be limiting in a modern music environment and production.

At Gainlab Audio, our goal was to improve on this classic concept in our lab. First, we added an additional mid-frequency filter between the low- and high-frequency filters to enhance the unit's versatility in the modern musical environment. We retained the option of simultaneously cutting and boosting the low and high bands, so that all the tricks a user would normally expect from an equalizer can be performed. In addition, the offset function can be used on these bands so that the mid-frequency of the simultaneous cut and boost can be offset relative to each other. After extensive laboratory testing, and using the equalizer in real-world applications, the unit's versatility has exceeded all expectations. It has proven suitable for recording and coloring masters and can be used for any equalization task. Its continued success over many years proves that users appreciate its control over the entire frequency range and its ability to always sound in tune even under the most extreme conditions. This is where the Empress gets its name. In short, the Empress is a two-channel passive equalizer equipped with a tube amplifier with three bands on each side. Thanks to its compact design, it only takes up 2U of space in the studio, yet it will have a significant impact on your sound.
