Introduced to the public in 1961—initially as a replacement for the Les Paul—the SG, or “Solid Guitar,” has become one of the brand’s greatest commercial successes over the decades.
It shares most of the Les Paul’s features, including a mahogany body and a set neck, a rosewood fingerboard with 22 frets (24.75" scale), a pair of humbucking pickups, and a bridge-and-tailpiece combination.
In contrast, it is slimmer and therefore lighter, with a cutaway that allows for easy access to the higher notes.
Gibson initially offered four variants of the SG: the SG Junior (a streamlined version of the Standard in the spirit of the Les Paul Junior), the SG Special, the SG Standard, and the more luxurious SG Custom with an ebony fingerboard.
Among its ambassadors—across all eras and styles—are such famous names as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Robby Krieger, Derek Trucks, and Frank Zappa.

The construction is precision-engineered with dimensions laser-scanned from vintage models, and the components are selected with uncompromising care: a set neck and body (using a “Long Neck Tenon” joint, "hot hide glue*") made of solid mahogany, a solid rosewood fingerboard, and hand-wound Custom Buckers Alnico III pickups (faithful replicas of the legendary P.A.F.s) with paper-in-oil capacitors.
Since 2014, Gibson has been using “Hot Hide Glue.” It has the same characteristics as the adhesives used in the 1950s. Derived from animal proteins, it offers the advantage of simplifying maintenance and any necessary repairs.
