Gibson ES-335 60s - vintage burst
Gibson introduced the first ES-335 in 1958 with the aim of offering an ideal mid-range model between its Hollow Bodies/Archtops and its Les Paul Solid Bodies. Just like the SG Standard or the Les Paul Custom, the ES-335 has become one of Gibson’s timeless classics.
Thanks to its design, this semi-hollow-body electric guitar with a central block excels in many musical genres, including blues, pop, jazz, classic rock, and hard rock.
The maple center block enhances sustain and minimizes the feedback issues inherent in hollow-body guitars. This feature allows the ES-335 to handle high levels of distortion.
The GIBSON USA Original Collection ES-335 60s (ES35600VBNH1) is no exception to this rule and carries on the tradition in a version that blends classic and contemporary elements.
It retains the essential features of the original 335s from the early 1960s, including a 3-ply maple/poplar/maple body with a center block, a set mahogany neck, a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, humbucking pickups, and a Tune-O-Matic-style bridge.
This “60s” version is distinguished by its “SlimTaper” neck profile, T-Type pickups, Grover Rotomatic “Milk Bottle” Kidney Button tuning machines, and “Small Blocks” fretboard inlays.
The pickups are Gibson T-Type humbuckers, replicas of the Gibson T-Top Humbucker installed on the company’s guitars from 1968 to 1980. This pickup was notably installed by Jimmy Page on his legendary 1959 Gibson Les Paul Sunburst “No. 1,” an instrument that helped lay the groundwork for the hard rock sound of the 1970s.
Featuring Alnico 5 magnets and a moderate DC resistance of 7.45k ohms, the T-Type produces full, dense, and defined tones and responds very well to adjustments of the instrument’s volume knob.
Each pickup is connected to its own volume and tone controls (500k) and high-end “Orange Drop” capacitors.
The hardware consists of a traditional ABR-1 Tune-O-Mati bridge, a Stop Bar tailpiece, and Grover Rotomatic “Milk Bottle” Kidney Button tuning machines.
Maintenance
The nitrocellulose lacquer, as found on vintage Gibsons, plays a major role in the instrument’s “breathability” thanks to its porous nature (vibrations are not muffled by the lacquer). However, this finish is relatively sensitive to contact with the plastics and foams found on certain stands, as well as to certain cleaning products that are too harsh.
